Guest mix from Miles Simpson, one of three residents of the London based Thunder party. Miles alongside Joseph Apted and Rick Hopkins have been throwing the quarterly Thunder party for the past couple of years, bringing in guests such as John Heckle, Aybee and Patrice Scott. Miles gives us a cracking mix of era spanning house & techno, with many a PYF favourite in there. If you’re in London be sure to check out the upcoming party with DJ Nature - should be a good ‘un!

FunkinEvil - After Dusk (Wild Oats) Buy
Great collaboration between Kyle Hall and Funkieven, released via Hall’s Wild Oats label. The a-side ‘Night’, is a raw acidic workout reminiscent of Jamal Moss’ works - no holds barred on this one. ‘Dusk’ on the b-side keeps things mellower with its loose bass-line and keys - top quality jam.
.

02. The Abstract Eye - I Feel It In My Forehead (Eglo Records) Buy
Gifted & Blessed gives us the second outing under The Abstract Eye moniker, via the always on-point Eglo Records. Like last years excellent ‘Cool Warm Divine’ EP, it’s another slice of Detroit infused electro and techno - highly recommended. Look out for the upcoming Wild Oats release under The Reflektor guise, for similar vibes.

03. Storm Queen - Lets Make Mistakes (Environ) Buy
After their excellent 2010 debut (‘Look Right Through’), last years Storm Queen offering, ‘It Goes On’, fell a little short for myself. However, 2012 sees Morgan Geist & Damon Scott come right with the ridiculously catchy ‘Lets Make Mistakes’ - couldn’t get this one out of my head.
.

04. James Mason - Nightgruv (Rush Hour) Buy
For me this was the most vital re-issue of the year. ‘Nightgruv’ recorded in 1984 and originally released in 1996, is a proto-house track that sounds a lot like Larry Heard. On the flip, ‘I Want Your Love’, is a slower boogie number - both tracks are so good that you can understand the previous high price tag. Rush Hour, once again doing a fine job with unearthing the gems.

Tr-One - Drum Dance (John Heckle Remix) (Apartment) Buy
Solid EP - Tr-One’s original version gives us a drum work-out for the first third of the record before breaking into some heavy synth lines. Juju & Jordash’s remix is heady dubbed-out affair, but its John Heckle’s dusty Chicago style remix with those swinging drums that did it for me.
.

MonkeyRobot - Basement Infusion (Bastard Jazz) Buy
The Belgian duo gives us the stand-out track from the Tall Black Guy’s ‘Tempo Dreams’ compilation. With its loose Moog bass-line and lovely synth work, the aptly titled ‘Basement Infusion’ is reminiscent of Floating Points - obviously a good thing.
.
DJ Nature - Savage Reprise (Golf Channel Recordings) Buy
More beatdown vibes, this time from dj & producer Milo Johnson. Much like KDJ or Theo, Johnson deftly uses his sample sources throughout ‘Return Of The Savage’ - one of many great albums released this year. With its raw and lo-fi vibes, this is definitely one for the heads.
.

Pollyn - Sometimes You Just Know (Moodymann Remix) (Music! Music Group) Buy
Dope remix from Kenny Dixon Jnr. Much like the Storm Queen release, so catchy I couldn’t get it out of my head. Apparently, there’s a DJ Harvey remix on this release - I wouldn’t know as I’ve yet to flip the record over! The KDJ re-work of Junior Boys’ ‘You’ll Improve Me’ was also real nice - the price tag, not so much.
.

Robert Hood - Motor City (Music Man Records) Buy
The third installment of Robert Hood’s Nighttime World, ‘Motor’, released via Belgian label Music Man, sees Hood building on his sound while retaining his distinct flair for quirky percussion and beautiful strings. A great album that is as compelling and vital as the previous two volumes.
Fit & Gunnar Wendel - Enter The Fog (FXHE) Buy
I wasn’t feeling the majority of the FXHE releases this year but the couple that really stood out for me were both from Aaron ‘Fit’ Siegel. The vocal track ‘Tonite’, reminds me of (and is as good as) Mad Mike’s house productions. ‘Enter The Fog’ sees Fit team up with Kassem Mosse giving us a track that hits all the right buttons.

11. Innerspace Halflife - Metropolitan (Episodes) Buy
Chicago based label Episodes, gave us a couple of cracking records this year. The first from label boss, Ike Release, included the excellent ‘Puntigam’ track. The third (and most recent) Episodes sees Release collaborate with Hakim Murphy under their Innerspace Halflife moniker. Heady, raw, machine driven music - highly recommended.

The Nathaniel X Project - Acsenxion 313 (Undertones) Buy
The New Jersey/New York house revival that had been building for the past year or so, came to a peak this year and along with that came the inevitable backlash. Outside of the poor quality Kerri Chandler knock-offs, there were some real highlights, including this great EP from veteran producer Nathaniel X.

13. Boyd Jarvis & Nick Anthony Simoncino - 1985 (Traveller Records) Buy
Another stalwart of the NY house scene, Boyd Jarvis, teams up with newcomer Nick Anthony Simoncino. Pretty sure this record won’t turn up in too many year end charts, but for me this did a fine job of sounding true to its roots without sounding derivative.
.

Delroy Edwards - Bells (L.I.E.S.) Buy
L.I.E.S. came into its own this year and no doubt that it’s up there for best label of 2012 - something that most folks agree upon (this, a rare thing in itself). Not every release was to my taste but all of them were uncompromising and had something to say. For me it was all about the Delroy Edwards, Svengalisghost and Bookworms releases.

Andres - New For U (La Vida) Buy
2012 saw Andres getting a lot more widespread attention and rightly so. In part it was due to ‘New For U’ being ubiquitously loved. An amazing debut for Andres’ La Vida label - one which I’m sure will be played years from now.
Actress - Ascending (Honest Jon’s Records) Buy
Not sure why it took me so long to pick up on this record, especially because of how much I enjoyed ‘Splazsh’ - I think the hype surrounding ‘R.I.P.’ put me off initially. Picking up from where ‘Splazsh’ left off, ‘R.I.P.’ is a less dance-floor orientated album - a heady, compelling and very enjoyable listen.
.

Fhloston Paradigm - The Chase (Hyperdub) Buy
Hyperdub picks up King Britt’s excellent Fhloston Paradigm material and lays it down on vinyl. By far the best material I’ve heard from him in a while - forward thinking unclassifiable music, which sees Britt in full-on John Carpenter mode.
.

Aybee - Signals (Deepblak) Buy
Following-up from ‘East Oakland Space Program’, Aybee continues his explorations with the aptly titled sophomore album, ‘Worlds’. Aybee’s distinct take on deep electronic music flourishes on this album. For the vinyl heads the accompanying four track EP is essential.
For it’s second release, Chicago imprint Love’s Label, gives us ‘When Love Lived’, the full length album from Brock Van Wey under his Earth House Hold guise. Less melancholy than Brock’s ambient works, however his production style is evident throughout, especially in his use of the vocals. Deep ambient house of the highest order and beautiful packaging to boot.

I haven’t posted that many reviews recently, so here’s a run down of some stand outs from the past few months.

First up, Theo Parrish teams up with Andrew Ashong on the most recent Sound Signature release, ‘Flowers’. Although Parrish’s touch can be heard on the title track, it’s certainly a welcome departure from his recent output. Ashong provides the two tracks on the flip, which are equally as catchy.

Andres follows-up from the popular ‘New For U’ release from earlier this year, with the second outing on his La Vida label, ‘Second Time Around’. A couple of tracks are updated and re-mastered versions of previous Mahogani releases - as to be expected all quality here and for me a better record than ‘New For U’.

Kyle Hall collaborates with Funkineven under the alias of Funkinevil on the latest release from Wild Oats. The a-side ‘Night’ is a raw acidic workout that’s reminiscent of Jamal Moss’ works - no holds barred on this one. ‘Dusk’ on the b-side keeps things mellower with it’s loose bass-line and keys - top quality jam.
For the labels second release, prolific Ukrainian producer Vakula, gives us two slow jazz inspired cuts, (’For Kira Nevis’ and ‘Curves’), both of which are in the vein of Moodymann’s productions. The b-side features the excellent ‘Lbeat’ which ups the bpm and can be heard on this recent mix.

Damon Bell’s ‘Nommo’ EP released via Deepblak, also fuses jazz with deep house to fine effect. The a-side gives us the 12 minute long ‘Pathways & Mindframes’, which sounds a lot like Pepe Bradock - obviously a good thing. ‘The Call Of NgKah’ sees Bell in beatdown mode, reminiscent of Reggie Dokes’ productions and ‘Heru’ is a wonderful jazz cut-up - heady stuff, that is well worth your time.

Another one to be heard on this recent mix is the unexpected release from Track Mode. Since it’s launch in the mid-90’s, Track Mode has been responsible for releasing some fine deep house records from the likes of Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, GU and Jovonn. After a few years absence Track Mode returns with a release from label head Brett Dancer. I’m not sure if this is new material or from the archives, but either way, it’s a great record. Hopefully we’ll hear more output from Track Mode soon.

Over the summer Fred P re-issued a few records on his Soul People imprint, including the excellent remix of ‘Come This Far’, which was originally released last year. I didn’t pick this one up at the time (opting for the full album release instead), so I snapped it up this time around. Finale Sessions also re-issued a couple of older Fred P tracks, albeit slightly different versions, on Finale Revisited Vol. 1. ‘Dawn’ and ‘Emotive Vibrations’ get extended this time around, both clocking-in at over 12 minutes, giving the tracks ample time to build - some of Fred’s best work to date.

Finale Sessions also gives us a split release from Chicago’s Hakim Murphy and Amir Alexander on the ‘New Roots’ EP. For myself this record is all about the two Amir Alexander tracks, with their tough drum programming, Atkins-esque bass-lines and emotive pads. Amir treads a similar path on the ‘Gutter Flex’ EP, the excellent debut release from Argot - both records are highly recommended. More machine driven funk, this time from Hakim Murphy who gives us ‘Wet Analog’, the second outing on Ike Release’s Episodes label. Raw, heady stuff here - if you picked-up the first Episodes then you’ll know what to expect. Also, be on the lookout for Episodes upcoming third release, “Astrodynamics”, from Ike and Hakim under their Innerspace Halflife moniker - top notch.

The first two volumes of Nighttime World released in 1995 & 2000, with their more gentle, jazz inspired moments, have long been some of my favourite works from Hood - just as seminal as ‘Minimal Nation’ or ‘Internal Empire’. Overall ‘Motor: Nighttime World Vol. 3′ is more beat driven, with a lot less of the jazz-inspired flair of the previous volumes - not that this is a bad thing. Hood’s knack for quirky percussion and beautiful strings is still evident throughout, but we also get to hear a 303 and vocal samples in a few of the tracks - nods to Basic Channel and Kraftwerk can also be heard. ‘Motor’ sees Hood building on his sound while retaining his distinct style - highly recommended.

More widely known as GB or Gifted & Blessed, the Los Angeles based producer has amassed an impressive catalog of releases and remixes; worked with legendary artists Airto & Flora Purim and his works have been widely heard through high profile ad placements. Gabriel was kind enough to answer a few questions, where he goes into some of his influences, how he began producing and how he enjoys discovering older gems over today’s more disposable music.

PYF: What is your earliest musical memory?

GB: I remember watching Tears for Fears on MTV as a baby and drumming along with sticks.

PYF: Who are some of your influences, both musical and non-musical? and how does their influence transpire in your work?

GB: I’m not even sure where to begin…I’m influenced by the music of the world…jazz, early electronic, field recordings, folkloric music, hip hop…and lots more. My non-musical influences range from personal experiences to relationships to mythology to nature. There are many great people who have come before and who are here now whom I admire. A question like this is particularly hard for me because as an artist my primary intention is to express what is true for me. I can’t say I seek out influences to inspire my work, it just happens, and ultimately as creators I think what we all create comes from one divine Source of inspiration.

PYF: How did you get into producing music? Was there anyone in particular that inspired/ helped you on your musical path?

GB: I got into producing on computer software out of necessity. I had a vision from a young age of doing a one man band kind of thing (like Prince, for example). As a kid I couldn’t afford a ton of instruments and recording tools, so I was fortunate to come up in a time when I could get some free software and sample records and get a synth and other instruments to create sound collages. I didn’t have one particular person who helped or inspired me on my musical path, but I’ve had various folks along the way share tips, ideas and funds.

PYF: Your home town of Los Angeles has some of the best and eclectic radio programming in the US - has this played a part in shaping your wide musical tastes and production styles?

GB: For certain. I worked at KCRW when I was 16 and used that opportunity to absorb all the different sounds. I also have a big family with widely varying tastes in music, which I think inspired my range more so than radio.

PYF: You produce under quite a few aliases and in many different genres. Is this a tactic you have taken because press/marketers and music buyers have a hard time opening their ears to styles which may not be as popular or easy to market?

GB: No, it’s a tactic I’ve used because the variety is fun and keeps me more interested. I’m not worried about who is having a hard time opening their ears. Let them come around to it when they’re ready.

PYF: A lot of your productions (especially under The Abstract Eye moniker) have a distinct Detroit feel to it, particularly the works of Juan Atkins/Cybotron. What was your first touch point with the music from Detroit and electronic music in general?

GB: I mentioned Tears for Fears earlier. Most of the music that came out when I was born and growing up was mainly electronic, so it’s been a part of my musical interests since the beginning. Early on I was all about Prince, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder…all the electronic enthusiasts, especially those with a soulful sound. I first really got heavily into electronic music at about age 9 when I was first hearing jungle from my brother. I remember particularly hearing Tom and Jerry (4 Hero) and thinking it was the craziest stuff out. As far as the music of Detroit goes, I think Juan Atkins was the first guy I really got into. Also my brother was into techno and house when that music was first coming out, so I would hear things like Inner City often.

PYF: Who are some of your contemporaries that you enjoy and any up-and-coming producers that we should be looking out for?

GB: A lot of my contemporaries are making awesome music but I find myself listening mostly to records from the past. There’s so much still I need to catch up on. I admit to missing out on a lot of current music, but in some ways I like it that way because so much of what’s out there now is disposable. A lot of my friends are making some great music though.

PYF: Would you mind naming a few of them?

GB: My reason for not being specific isn’t to be mysterious or too cool…it’s because I’m not big on the tendency of beatmakers/producers to clique up and vouch for one another rather than to stand on one’s own two. Also, in my view it really shouldn’t matter to my audience what I think about other artists and their music. What should matter about me is what my music evokes, not who or what I like.

PYF: You use a lot of analogue equipment - what is your studio comprised of and are there any instruments that you find indispensable in your creation process and final productions? Also, does using analogue instruments pose any difficulties/worries when you’re touring and playing live shows?

GB: Yeah I have a good amount of gear here. I’m not super strict about only analog…I have some good digital pieces, particularly early digital delays and drum machines. Nothing in my arsenal is indispensable…I use whatever I have at the moment but the setup is always evolving. I don’t bring my big keyboards out much, so when I’m playing live it’s most often with a portable rack setup. It can be a problem for some promoters who don’t get it so they expect me to just bring a laptop like all the other guys (which I do sometimes for DJ sets, but it doesn’t give an accurate depiction of the music making process).

PYF: Selling music via digital channels has become the norm for most musicians. Do you feel at odds releasing music in this manner, when a lot of the analogue warmth has been lost?

GB: I’m glad to share the music however possible, but vinyl just sounds better, period.

PYF: Speaking of vinyl - are there any plans for additional pressings of The Provider and The Cool Warm Divine EP’s, which both had limited initial runs and are quite hard to come by now?

GB: No plans to repress right now…maybe down the line though. Better jump on the next releases while they’re still fresh!

PYF: A lot of your productions are instrumental based, however the recent Steoples release is a collaboration between yourself and vocalist Yeofi Andoh. You also did some early work with Steve Spacek - how did both of those projects come about and how does the collaborative process differ from when you’re working solo? Are there any other collaborations in the works?

GB: Yeofi and I have worked together for a long time now, since 2004 on my “Soundtrack for Sunrise” LP. Steve Spacek and a few other vocalists participated in that project as well. The collaborative process differs from my solo works in that when I’m working with someone, it becomes about what we are creating together, so the process is more about making sure everyone involved is happy with the end result. Also, with more than one mind involved, it becomes a dialogue and something is achieved that I couldn’t accomplish by myself. There are other collaborations in the works, yes (more on those later).

PYF: You did a remix of Carmen McRae’s ‘Just A Little Lovin’ which subsequently was used in a TV commercial that aired during the 2011 Superbowl - that must have been quite amazing having something that you had a hand in creating being heard by millions of people. Has that lead to any other work or opportunities within the tv/film/advertising world?

GB: I’ve had other placements in film and TV both prior to that and since then. It was awesome to land that placement in particular because it was on such a large scale. Most other spots I’ve done haven’t been as extravagant. But yes it got the attention of some ad agencies and production companies with whom I’ve dealt since.

PYF: You recently released a 12″ via Irish label All City and your forthcoming The Abstract Eye EP is being released by English label Eglo. How did those relationships come about? Any plans to collaborate with your Eglo label mates?

GB: Both came about through mutual friends and also because the world of music is a pretty small one so you’re bound to interact with folks eventually. Some collaborations may come about with the Eglo guys in the future…we’ll see!

PYF: What else do have coming up in 2012?

GB: Plenty more music!

Yet more great releases to check out.

Since it’s inception in 2009, Eglo have released a lot of great material. Of course Floating Points has been responsible for many of the labels most well known releases, however their growing roster are adding to those highlights. Eglo’s latest signing, LA’s Gifted & Blessed gives us three tracks under The Abstract Eye moniker, which was slated for a late March release (but still no sign of it yet). Like last years excellent ‘Cool Warm Divine’ EP, it’s another slice of Detroit infused electro and techno, which fits in perfectly with label mates FunkinEven and ARP.101 - highly recommended. Another London based label, Don’t Be Afraid, gives us their latest offering from Mr. Beatnick. The ‘Sun Goddess’ EP, is four deep house cuts, with my personal favourite, ‘Shifting Sands’, having a distinct Theo vibe to it. King Britt also sees a release via yet another UK label, this time being the always interesting Hyperdub. The release under Britt’s Fhloston Paradigm alias, is by far the best material I’ve heard from him in a while. Forward thinking unclassifiable music, with a similar vibe to some of the Actress material - not to be missed.

On the other side of the pond, Aybee gives us his first release of 2012, ‘Astral Metronome’, via his Deepblak imprint - three transmissions of deep techno that picks things up from where ‘11:11′ left off - as usual, highly recommended. Also on the deep techno tip is the forthcoming ‘Subsequent’ EP, the first in a series of vinyl only Episodes from Chicago based Ike Release. All four cuts (including the Hakim Murphy remix) are stellar, with ‘Puntigam’ being the stand out for myself. From new Chicago to old, Black Market re-issues The Housefactors’ ‘Play It Loud’ EP. Original produced by Larry Heard back in 1988, the EP is a lesson in raw jacking house - essential stuff. Another vital release seeing a re-issue is the excellent ‘In The Dark’ album from 2005. One of the strongest releases in Still Music’s excellent catalogue, it compiles some of Detroit’s finest producers, including Marcellus Pittman, Mike Huckaby and Delano Smith.

Mo Kolours gives us the second in a trilogy of EP’s, ‘Banana Wine’, released on One Handed Music. Following up from last years excellent ‘Drum Talking’ EP, ‘Banana Wine’ treads a similar unclassifiable path with percussion heavy dub infused beats, that somehow capture both Mo Kolour’s Mauritian roots as well as his current home of South London. Also included on the EP, a remix from DC based duo Beautiful Swimmers, of one of the EP’s highlights ‘Mini Culcha’. All of the Mo Kolours material thus far seems ripe for some remixes, so hopefully we’ll be hearing more soon. The EP is available on vinyl as well as a free download from One Handed Music’s Bandcamp page.
